Cutting Auto Emissions to Save the Planet

BAYCS joined Dan Becker, the director of the Safe Climate Transport Campaign, who has been fighting transportation emissions for over 30 years. He demonstrated why we need to focus on the auto industry to slow climate change, why this front of the fight against climate change is interconnected with the general fight against fossil fuels, and what we can all do as individuals.

On April 24, 2022, we hosted the Bay Area Youth Climate Summit's Earth Day Summit, featuring workshops, discussions, and a climate action planning session! Our eight workshops were focused on two themes -- policy and action -- and included topics ranging from the Green New Deal to food justice to restoring biodiversity. High schoolers from the Bay Area and beyond learned more and got involved with climate action.

The BAYCS joined the Marine Conservation Institute and EarthEco International to dive into the 30x30 ocean conservation movement, advocating to protect 30% of the world's oceans by 2030! We learned about the science and policy work behind this goal.

The BAYCS joined The Housing Action Coalition to learn about rising Bay Area housing costs. We discussed how our housing choices impact the prevalence of displacement and gentrification and its intersection with our environmental goals.

BAYCS hosted a career exposition that focused on the field of environmental science. It included 6 panelists, ranging from an environmental attorney, a climate change photographer, and the Chair of the California Energy Commission.

BAYCS partnered with the Compton Kidz Club and The Youth Vote to raise funds and gather donations to our local community fridges in Northern and Southern California. We assembled 300+ eco-friendly hygiene kits, arranged 4 coat drives, and received $15,000 in donations from green companies and individuals! On December 10th, Human Rights Day, we posted a video about this project, shown below.

Indigenous Climate Activism with CIEA
Thursday, November 12th, 2020 from 2pm-3pm

BAYCS collaborated with the California Indigenous Environmental Alliance (CIEA) to feature their inspiring work. The workshop provided a space for others to hear about the experiences of an Indigenous-led organization and learn how Indigenous peoples have been at the forefront of climate activism for generations. Furthermore, it was an opportunity to learn what some local organizations are doing to restore cultural traditions and practices, in such an urbanized Bay Area.

BAYCS presented at the 2020 Bay Area Science Festival! We were featured on an interactive Q&A panel with various young climate activists who presented at the 1st annual Bay Area Youth Climate Summit.  Those youth shared their experiences in the climate movement, why they're so passionate about environmental issues, and how you can get involved, too!

BAYCS joined Brightline, a local organization that promotes sustainability and opportunity in under-served communities in the Bay Area through policy advocacy and partnerships. They protect and empower communities in need by advancing environmental justice, ensuring job creation, and advocating for affordable and sustainable housing. They hosted an interactive session on their community-driven air quality monitoring program, co-led by youth and adults.

Bay Area Youth Climate Summit 2020!

On September 12, 2020, we kicked off a day-long virtual summit, uniting 280 youth from 88 schools, 14 States, 5 countries, and 7 time zones. The day was filled with 16 workshops ranging from the California Academy of Science’s Hope for Reefs Program to climate justice activism with Youth Vs. Apocalypse to an Environmental Entrepreneurs Panel. We concluded with school-based action-planning workshops in which we offered models and tools, and then challenged our peers to develop achievable plans to launch at their schools. In total, 25 Climate Action Plans were created, and 75% of these students are continuing their work today!
