YOUTH TO BE
AND BE THE CHANGE.
JUNE 28th - JULY 2nd, 2021
10AM - 12PM
THIS CAMP WILL BE VIRTUAL VIA ZOOM ALL DAYS EXCEPT OPTIONAL FRIDAY FIELD TRIP
Looking for interactive summer activities for your student during the shelter in place? Bay Area Youth Climate Camp is a program started and run by students and teachers at Lick-Wilmerding High School and members of the Bay Area Youth Climate Summit in San Francisco. It's for incoming 4th-6th graders interested in learning more in-depth about climate change and allows kids to be cognizant of some of the most pressing issues facing our generation. Through online interactive learning, students will engage in activities and lessons that teach how climate change affects their lives and future, its intersectional aspects, and how they can make a difference.
Intro to Climate Change + the Environment
What is climate change? Where does it come from? Students will learn through videos, discussion, and drawing. We will also look at graphs to better understand common scientific trends. Day 1 aims to familiarize students with terms and vocabulary associated with climate change!
All about Oceans and Water!
How does climate change affect our oceans, and vice-versa? We'll get to do exciting, hands-on experiments to understand more about ocean acidification and coral bleaching. Amelia Fortgang, a youth EarthEcho Water Ambassador, will lead an activity to test water quality in our own homes.
Food and our Ecosystems!
How does our diet contribute to climate change? How can we make environmentally-conscious decisions at school and at home? We will also make eco-friendly, vegan snacks together as well plant our own house plant.
*Note to parents: we do not plan to turn your kids into vegans!
Environmental Art and Activism!
Why is being sustainable so important and why should you recycle? How can you reuse the things you have in your own house to create better, newer tools or items for you and your family? We will be doing fun crafts out of plastic bags or any recycle that can be found at home and creating posters or informative art on what climate change is and what they have learned throughout the week. There will also be a guest youth activist joining us!
OPTIONAL: CAL Academy of Sciences Field Trip!
We will meet in front of CAL Academy and spend the morning exploring the many exhibits and do fun learning activities relating to climate change and the environment. Lunch will be eaten outside, socially distanced - kids are required to bring their own food and water. We will be wearing masks at all times indoors. If there is time after lunch we will explore the park and areas surrounding the Academy. More details to come!
How much does Climate Camp cost?
The majority of materials will be send directly to you and covered, which include materials for labs, souveniurs, and tools for projects! The price of camp is on a sliding scale (pay what you can!) We calculate that the full cost for the entire week will be $50. You can easily venmo us directly! All proceeds go towards camp materials and to fund our other program for high schoolers, the Bay Area Youth Climate Summit. For the Field trip, there will be an additional cost of $30, the fee for the Academy ticket.
What if my child can't attend all of the sessions or has a conflict on one of the days?
No worries! Although some sessions build on each other, it's okay if your child needs to miss a day.
Who will be teaching camp?
The Bay Area Youth Climate Camp is taught by bayareaycs high schoolers and other special guest speakers. Check out our bios below!
Is there a registration deadline or cancellation fee?
Registration will close June 20th, 2021 at 11:59 pm. If you need to cancel after June 25th, please consider making a $15 donation to our other program, the Bay Area Youth Climate Summit, happening in September!
Does my child need to have any prior knowlege about climate change before participating in BAYCC?
Not at all! All knowlege levels are welcome, whether your kid has never heard of climate change or whether they're already an expert and are excited to learn more in-depth. We just hope they're interested in science and discovering the world around them.
Does my child have to attend the Friday CAL Academy field trip?
No of couse not! The field trip is an totally optional and extra experience. Of course, we'd love to meet your child and let them enjoy a fun in person experience with peers, however we totally understand if you or your child does not feel comfortable with meeting in person as of right now!
Who will be chaperoning the field trip?
Depending on how many kids sign up, we will have at least 3 (or more) camp leaders ages 16+ accompanying your child and their peers at the museum.
