About

Looking for interactive summer activities for your student during the shelter in place? Bay Area Youth Climate Camp is a program started and run by students and teachers at Lick-Wilmerding High School and members of the Bay Area Youth Climate Summit in San Francisco. It's for incoming 4th-6th graders interested in learning more in-depth about climate change and allows kids to be cognizant of some of the most pressing issues facing our generation. Through online interactive learning, students will engage in activities and lessons that teach how climate change affects their lives and future, its intersectional aspects, and how they can make a difference.

AGENDA

DAY

1

Intro to Climate Change + the Environment

What is climate change? Where does it come from? Students will learn through videos, discussion, and drawing. We will also look at graphs to better understand common scientific trends. Day 1 aims to familiarize students with terms and vocabulary associated with climate change!

2

DAY
All about Oceans and Water!

How does climate change affect our oceans, and vice-versa? We'll get to do exciting, hands-on experiments to understand more about ocean acidification and coral bleaching. Amelia Fortgang, a youth EarthEcho Water Ambassador, will lead an activity to test water quality in our own homes.

DAY

3

Food and our Ecosystems!

How does our diet contribute to climate change? How can we make environmentally-conscious decisions at school and at home? We will also make eco-friendly, vegan snacks together as well plant our own house plant.

*Note to parents: we do not plan to turn your kids into vegans!

4

DAY
Environmental Art and Activism!

Why is being sustainable so important and why should you recycle? How can you reuse the things you have in your own house to create better, newer tools or items for you and your family? We will be doing fun crafts out of plastic bags or any recycle that can be found at home and creating posters or informative art on what climate change is and what they have learned throughout the week. There will also be a guest youth activist joining us!

DAY

5

OPTIONAL: CAL Academy of Sciences Field Trip!

We will meet in front of CAL Academy and spend the morning exploring the many exhibits and do fun learning activities relating to climate change and the environment. Lunch will be eaten outside, socially distanced - kids are required to bring their own food and water. We will be wearing masks at all times indoors. If there is time after lunch we will explore the park and areas surrounding the Academy. More details to come!
